Calico Laredo

Animal Balance

We had an amazing weekend in Laredo at our clinic and celebrated our 2,000th cat surgery, with our partners Best Friends for Life and Laredo Animal Protective Society. Their teams work tirelessly, not only to serve their community as a shelter, but also to TNR community cats every month! In addition, they host a monthly low-cost spay/neuter clinic with us that is open to companion animals, a service desperately needed in the community. When we include dogs in the count, our teams have done just short of 3000 surgeries since first partnering in 2022!

We wanted to take a moment to share a few photos of this rare calico MALE cat from a feral colony that we neutered with this team last month! Only about 1 in every three thousand male cats can be calico- he was a really special guy. Male calicos are born with an extra X chromosome. He was a very feisty community cat, so he was safely recovered and then released to be back with his colony.

Spaying and neutering feral cats can improve relations with the humans they live nearby reducing fighting, yowling, and spraying. It also prevents more kittens from being born, which helps reduce the load on local shelters and rescues. The surgery can also improve their health and make them less likely to spread disease within their colony and others. The shelter has several community cats living on the premises and some working cats available to adopt!
